G4IT

Integration of an eco-design recommendation system into G4IT, a tool for measuring the environmental impact of digital services.

G4IT is an open source tool developped by Sopra Steria for measuring the environmental impact of an information system or a digital service for life cycle analysis. It calculates the footprint related to equipment, cloud infrastructure, and AI models, and presents the results through actionable indicators and visualizations.

G4IT addresses a growing challenges: the digital sector currently represents for 3 to 4% of a global greenhouse gas emissions, as much as civil aviation, and this share keeps rising with the growth of cloud computing and generative AI.

The project aims to improve G4IT by integrating a system of environmental good practice recommendations, drawn from eco-design guidelines and automatically tailored to calculation results, in order to help users more easily identify actions to reduce their footprint.

A good practice is a concrete eco-design action that reduces the environmental impact of a digital service. For example, optimizing the PUE (Power Usage Effectiveness) of a data center - that is, improving the ratio between the total energy consumed and the energy actually used by the servers - significantly reduces emissions related to cloud infrastructure.

The goal? Transform G4IT from a passive evaluation tool into a proactive decision-support tool.

Our solution integrates directly into G4IT's results page via a new tab "View Recommendations". These are ranked from most to least relevant, thanks to a scoring engine we developed that analyzes the input data of the evaluated digital service.

Users can then select the recommendations they wish to apply. This automatically generates a new version of their service, directly comparable to the original, allowing them to visualize the concrete environmental gains achieved through each implemented action.

For this project, we have focused on six recommendations from the RGESN (French General Reference Framework for Eco-design of Digital Services). The architecture of our solution allows Sopra Steria's developers to easily expand the catalogue with new good practices in the future.
